What are the differences between a slot and a slat? In some aircraft, the slats are fixed, which opens up a slot between the wing and the slat. In this case, the terms slot and slat are used interchangeably. "Leading edge slot" by Sanchom - Own work. Licensed under CC BY 3.0 via Commons. A number of airliners use movable slats, in which case, the system is called slat, rather than slot. aircraft design - What is the difference between flaps and ... $\begingroup$ Just wanting to point that flaps can be located both at front and back of the wing (trailing-edge or leading-edge flaps), while slats only exists at the front. Main difference between slats/flaps is not location ,but (as you pointed out) functionality $\endgroup$ – Radu094 Jul 28 '15 at 13:57 Difference Between Flaps And Slats? - Airliners.net

FYI: you picture is inaccurate as slats are on the leading edge of the wing, what you have marked are the flaps. They both do the same thing which is generate lift/drag and many pilots will use them together/interchangeably, but as you are trying to educate others I believe accuracy is necessary.
